If you’re an avid gamer, you probably have a lot of different games on your computer. Games aren’t as compact as they once were, but at least hard drives are getting larger. There may come a time when you get a new hard drive and want to switch your Steam install folder. It’s easy to do, and we’ll show you all the steps you need to know to move the install folder of a game on Steam below.

How to Move the Install Folder of a Game on Steam

To move the install folder of a game on Steam:

  1. Launch Steam on your computer.
  2. Navigate to the Steam Library.
  3. Right-click the game you want to move.
  4. Click on Properties.

  5. Go to the Local Files tab.
  6. Click on Move install folder.

  7. Select the target location and press Move.

After clicking Move, wait for the Move Content progress to fully complete. It may take several minutes, depending on the game’s size and your hard drive’s speed.

If you do not see the Move Install Folder option, it’s because you do not have another Steam Library folder on a different drive. Continue reading to learn how to set one up.

How to Change Your Steam Library Folder

If you want to set a new Steam Library Folder to save downloaded games, it’s easy to do using one of Steam’s Storage Manager. 

  1. Right-click Steam in your taskbar and click on Settings.
  2. Navigate to the Downloads tab.
  3. Click on Steam Library Folders.
  4. Click on the plus icon under Storage Manager.
  5. Select or create a new Steam Library Folder.
  6. Click on Select.

The new location will now be listed on the Storage Manager page. If you want to make a location the default for all new downloads, select the location and press the three dots on the right side. Click on Make Default, and a gold star should appear to the right of the location.

Note: You can only have one Steam library folder per drive. Steam will manage multiple game installs in a single folder for you.
