How to Check if Someone Else Is Using Your WhatsApp Account

Worried that someone else is using your WhatsApp account? It’s a valid concern, especially in this day and age where so much of our personal information is stored online. Luckily, there are a few things you can check to verify if someone might have access to your account. Here’s how to check if someone else has logged into your WhatsApp account.

How to Check if Someone Else Is Using Your WhatsApp Account

WhatsApp users can check if someone else has access to their account by seeing if it is already linked to the WhatsApp web version, checking for unknown outgoing messages, and verifying that the account information is accurate.

Using WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp account hijackers will typically link the account to WhatsApp web, the website version of WhatsApp.

To use WhatsApp web:

  1. Launch WhatsApp on your mobile device.
  2. Tap on the Settings button.
  3. Go to Linked Devices.
  4. Tap on Link a Device.
  5. Go to web.whatsapp.com on your computer.
  6. Scan the QR code on WhatsApp Web using your phone.

After linking your WhatsApp account to WhatsApp web, you can see a list of linked devices inside the app. You should only see one device linked to your account. If you see other unknown devices, tap on the devices to log them out, and then enable two-factor authentication.

Checking Outgoing Messages

If someone has access to your WhatsApp account, they are likely trying to send messages to other contacts. To check your outgoing messages on WhatsApp, open the app and tap on the Chats button. Look for any suspicious outgoing messages that you do not remember sending. If you do see some strange-looking outgoing messages, there’s a chance someone may have access to your account.

Verify Your Account Information

Finally, someone with access to your WhatsApp account may want to change your contact information in an attempt to take over the account for themselves. For that reason, it’s a good idea to double-check your WhatsApp account settings.

To check your account information inside WhatsApp, Launch WhatsApp on your device and tap on the Settings button. Tap on your name, and verify that your name, profile photo, phone number, and about section is correct.

How to Secure Your WhatsApp Account

The best way to secure your WhatsApp account is by enabling two-step authentication.

To enable two-step verification in WhatsApp:

  1. Launch WhatsApp.
  2. Tap on the Settings button on the bottom right.
  3. Tap on Account and go to Two-Step Verification.
  4. Hit the Enable button, enter your six-digit pin, and add an email.
